I don’t know if it was an art style choice or what, but some fire-based moves don’t look as good as others. XV is a massive improvement over its predecessor in terms of lighting, stages, UI and character models the only thing that lets it down is some of the particle effects on certain special moves with characters like Kyo or Terry.

The most obvious upgrade from KOFXIV is the graphics. The King of Fighters XV aims to ‘Shatter all Expectations’ with its newest instalment, and after the lacklustre reception of KOFIV from the community, developers SNK seem to have gone all out to make sure this is one of the best modern- KOF games yet. Fast forward to February 2022 and The King of Fighters is back with The King of Fighters XV. As video game development got more ambitious and time consuming, SNK decided to stop the yearly KOF releases, as well as the year of release in the title.
First released all the way back in 1994 for arcades and initially an annual game, similar to modern sports titles like FIFA, a new King of Fighters game would come out in the arcades every year until 2003. My fingers are crossed that they may add the character Orochi as a boss character like they did with Omega Rugal. Given the huge abundance of characters and that Team Awakened Orochi is in it, it’s not too surprising that they would bring it over to a new platform as they announce the characters as DLC for The King of Fighters XV.

Perhaps what’s best about it is that it received an update adding rollback netcode back in December and this new PlayStation 4 version also has it. This latest version added all the previous characters, new modes, and game balance changes.
The original game was the series’ first “dream match” game which was non-canon to the overall story and featured most of the characters from every entry before it. It’s an updated version that was released on Steam back in 2014. That being said, I do really like their designs from the character art shown.Īccompanying this announcement is that The King of Fighters ’98: Ultimate Match Final Edition is now on PlayStation 4. I’m typically not excited for different versions of the same character. Their announcement trailer doesn’t show off any gameplay, but we do know that they’re expected to release in August. However, it seems that similar to their debut in The King of Fighters ’97, they will now have separate versions based on their stronger Orochi-powered states. They’re available as Team Orochi in the base game. If you’ve played The King of Fighters XV then you likely recognize these characters. It consists of Orochi Yashiro, Orochi Shermie, and Orochi Chris. Now we finally know that the next set of DLC will be Team Awakened Orochi. We’ve seen the first two teams come out with Team Garou and Team South Town as well as a surprise announcement for Omega Rugal at the third Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable. A few weeks before The King of Fighters XV launched, we learned that there were already plans for the game to have four DLC teams for 12 additional characters total.
